The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is working to unlock billions of dollars in diaspora capital by creating trusted and regulated investment channels that enable Ghanaians living abroad to invest more easily in Ghana's capital market. The initiative aims to transform a portion of the country's remittance inflows into long-term financing for businesses, infrastructure, and national development.
According to the SEC, engagements with Ghanaian communities in the United Kingdom and the United States revealed strong interest in investing back home. However, many potential investors face challenges accessing credible, transparent, and regulated investment opportunities.
The Commission is therefore collaborating with broker-dealers and other capital market stakeholders to develop the necessary frameworks and investment products that will make it easier for diaspora investors to participate in Ghana's financial markets.
The SEC noted that Ghana receives approximately US$8 billion in annual remittances, and even directing a portion of those funds into regulated capital market investments could significantly strengthen businesses, finance infrastructure projects, and support long-term economic growth.
This initiative reflects the SEC's broader commitment to expanding investor participation, improving access to the capital market, and creating sustainable funding opportunities that contribute to Ghana's economic development.
